Louisville Rites of Passage

This free program runs from March 2022 to November 2022. It will support you as you learn about yourself, your heritage, your community and the natural world and develop skills to help you become an independent adult.

Louisville Rites of Passage has 2 phases – the Path to Passage and the Rites of Passage Journey. Click here to join!

Path to Passage

Anytime between the ages of 13 and 19, you are eligible to start on the Path to Passage.  At your own pace you will participate in Step Sessions - programs, outings, and events that prepare you for adulthood.  You can find out about these opportunities on the LROP Events page. The stamps you get in your passport keep a record of your experiences.  The Louisville Rites of Passage staff will also track your participation and progress and you will be rewarded as you reach milestones along the way.

The four Focus Areas  – Heritage, Community, Land and Self-Determination – are the pillars of the program.  You will explore these areas over time, building your knowledge, skills, and confidence.  Step Sessions in the these focus areas can be one-time experiences or short series led by a wide variety of community members.

The Step Sessions in each of the Focus Areas highlighted in your passport are required to progress to the Rites of Passage Journey.

Rites of Passage Journey

Youth between the ages of 16-19 who have competed the Path to Passage, can embark on the 2-month intensive Rites of Passage Journey, which offers financial incentives, access to apprenticeships and international travel once completed.

Along with other young people, you will be given space to reflect on your life, work deeper in areas you need to strengthen, demonstrate your achievements and preparedness, and make the final transition from childhood to adulthood.

Once you complete the Rites of Passage Journey, the community will grant you the privileges and responsibilities of young adulthood in a celebratory sacred ceremony with family and community members who have invested in your success.
